Episode 011

Weaving in the Ego / with Brittany Gene

Brittany grew up with an intuitive, inherited, and practical sense of design. She is a Navajo woman, so weaving, building, and creating were in the day-to-day existence of her community and when she officially became a designer in title, it was an external label for a way of problem solving that had always been core to her identity. With her, we discuss the sometimes backwards way that design emphasizes the individual over community, far out lofty research over immediate need-based function, and what it takes to trust your intuition enough to know when something is off and act on it.

We also get in the weeds on what ego is, how it functions for a creative person and where it helps and hurts. Margaret finally gets to enjoy learning about a design couple’s dynamic as this is one of Brittany and her husband, Rico’s, ongoing debates. We hope you feel a real confidence boost to trust yourself from this fantastic conversation and designer.
